Frequently Asked Pediatric Dentistry Questions
Parents ask us important questions about their child’s dental care every single day, and we’re more than happy to answer them so they can have all the information they need to take care of their favorite smile. Below, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most popular ones we receive every day, though you can always give us a call if there is anything else you’d like to know!
When should my child see the dentist for the first time?
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a child should start seeing a dentist as soon as their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. At this appointment, we’ll give your child an Oral Health Risk Assessment so we can ensure their smile gets off to a strong start.
What will my child’s very first appointment be like?
After being given a brief tour of the dental office, A dentist will examine your child’s teeth and gums while they sit in your lap. You’ll be with them the entire time, and once he’s finished, a dentist will answer all of your questions and give you tips on how to look after your new smile. Be sure to ask him about how to make teething easier!
How do I get my child to stop sucking their thumb?
This is a very common issue many parents have to deal with, and we can offer you a number of strategies that focus on positive reinforcement rather than punishment. For more stubborn children, we can actually place a small appliance called a thumb crib that prevents them from putting it in their mouth. Once the child has broken the habit, we can easily remove it.
How old is the right age for braces?
Our Orthodontists recommends that every child should be seen by an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. At this appointment, he’ll determine whether your child could benefit from treatment and when the right time would be to begin. Sometimes, starting braces a little later after the teeth have had more of a chance to come in will make the treatment process go smoother. It should be noted that braces can be used at any age to help improve the look and function of a patient’s smile, but starting at an early age is always best.
Do you offer adult orthodontics?
Yes, contrary to popular belief, it’s possible to straighten your teeth at any age! We offer a number of services specifically designed for adults, namely Clear Aligners and lingual braces. Both of these treatments have a very discreet, practically invisible appearance that enables older patients to maintain their normal look and daily habits while they improve their smile.
What is parking like at your dental office?
Located within the Roosevelt Collection, we provide 2 hours of free parking with validation. Please park in the blue section of the underground parking garage, use the blue elevators and bring your parking ticket to our office on the 2nd floor.
Do you accept dental insurance?
Yes, Chicago Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is one of the few specialty dental offices that accepts virtually all PPO dental insurance plans. We’re in-network with most providers as well! Give us a call to learn how we can use your particular policy to help you save at your child’s next visit.
