Getting braces can seem like a big deal! Whether you are a parent who is thinking about getting treatment for your adolescent, or you are a teen who is curious about the road ahead, you may be eager to learn as much as possible! Your care provider will be happy to answer questions during your consultation. In the meantime, you can gain some valuable insight by reviewing the information in this blog post.
How Old Do You Have to Be to Get Braces?
It is best for kids to have an orthodontic evaluation before they turn 7 years old, though orthodontic treatment may not start until the patient is 8 or 9. Often, kids undergo phase 1 treatment, which is later followed by phase 2 care a few years later.
If your teen did not undergo phase 1 treatment, do not worry. Braces during adolescence can still accomplish a lot and set your child up for a lifetime of sound oral health.
Is It Okay to Chew Gum with Braces?
It is best not to chew gum while wearing braces. That is simply because the gum can stick to the brackets and wires, and it is not always easy to clean off. If you do choose to take your chances with gum, be sure to use a sugar-free variety so it has a lower risk of causing tooth decay.
Is It Okay to Drink Soda with Braces?
Drinking soda is bad for oral health in general, and it can be especially risky when you have braces. The sugars in it may stick to your teeth and around your brackets and wires, increasing your risk of decay. Soda is also acidic and can wear away at your tooth enamel.
It would be best to avoid soda altogether, but if you do indulge, be sure to do so only on occasion and stick to good oral hygiene habits.
Is It Bad to Swallow Braces Rubber Bands?
If possible, you should not swallow your braces rubber bands. If you accidentally do swallow one, though, it is probably not a big deal. It should work its way through your system in 3 – 4 hours or so.
Can Braces Get Stuck Together When You Kiss?
Kissing is safe with braces. In extremely rare cases, braces have gotten stuck together, but this should not happen if you kiss gently and carefully.
Do I Need a Mouthguard for Braces?
If you play sports, it is important to protect both your braces and your oral tissues. For this reason, it is best to invest in a custom mouthguard that is designed to work with your orthodontic treatment.
How Long Will I Have to Wear My Braces?
Understandably, you may be eager to see the results of your treatment. However, you will have to be patient. The average treatment time with braces is 18 – 36 months. In some cases, though, more or less time is required. During your consultation, your treatment provider may be able to offer an estimate of how long it will be before your braces can be removed.
