The internet is a wonderful thing. In just a matter of seconds, you can have a wealth of information available. However, it can be challenging to decipher what’s true and what’s not. For instance, there have been many myths about metal braces circulating that simply aren’t true. Read on to learn why you shouldn’t always believe what you hear or read on the internet about braces.
Myth #1: Braces Will Always Hurt.
The thought of braces forcing your teeth into alignment may sound painful, but the truth is that the mild soreness people experience typically only lasts a day or two after your braces come on or are adjusted. During this time, you can eat softer foods and take over-the-counter pain relievers to overcome any discomfort, but again, it is only temporary. Most of the time, you will not be in any pain.
Myth #2: You Can’t Play Sports or Instruments with Braces.
Getting braces doesn’t have to halt your activities and interests.
If you play an instrument that requires the use of your mouth, such as the flute, clarinet, oboe, or trombone, you may be worried that you won’t be able to once you get braces. Although adjusting to braces can take a little bit of time, it is completely possible to continue playing an instrument even with braces.
As far as sports are concerned, the key is to protect your smile from a potential impact. As long as you wear a mouthguard, you should be able to keep playing any sport.
Myth #3: If You Kiss Someone with Braces, You Could Get Caught.
On TV, you may have seen two people with braces start to kiss and get stuck in each other’s orthodontic work. Braces are much smaller and sleeker than ever, and it is difficult for them to be become entangled with someone else’s. You likely don’t have to worry about this situation happening in real life.
Myth #4: Braces Are Only for Kids and Teens.
Many people think that braces are only meant to help children and teens, that brace can’t help once you’ve reached adulthood. Although youngsters still make up the majority of orthodontic patients with braces, adults account for about 25 percent. You do not have to be a child or teen to correct misalignment with braces, and there are plenty of adults who choose to straighten their teeth with traditional braces.
Myth #5: Braces Permanently Straighten Teeth.
It’s true that braces shift teeth to be more aligned. However, if you don’t wear your retainers consistently or follow your orthodontist’s instructions, your teeth can easily transition back to their former positions. Braces obviously play a major role in giving you the smile you want, but you have to continue good habits in order to keep the results.
In the end, the best source to turn to with questions about braces is the right source: your orthodontist! They can address your concerns and give you the truth about treatment. Armed with this knowledge, you can make smarter decisions for your smile!
